We headed over early this afternoon to make a few runs today. It was awesome. My wife took pics while I skied. While waiting, she found an iPhone on the ground. Turned out it belonged to a photographer who was there. He was really thankful and took a few pics of me hitting the last jump. I’ll try and post those when he uploads them; really nice guy. His site is www.RJEphoto.net He’s out of NJ. The three of us were trying to figure out why people would rather go to the beach instead…

Despite skiing up on the Washington three times before (10k Vert Day!, Great Gulf- May 22nd, 2009, Hillman’s Highway- May 3rd, 2008) this was my first time in the bowl itself. Pics don’t do the place justice. Anyways, buddy couldn’t drive his Dad’s car up and I recently sold my…

Date(s) Skied: May 23, 2010 Resort or Ski Area: Eastern Snowfields, Mt. Washington Conditions: Sunny bluebird day in the 70’s, minimal wind and almost no clouds, corn snow Trip Report: With the Auto Road open, trailboss and I decided to go the slacker route. The original plan was to go to the Great Gulf but, when we got to the “parking lot” at the 7.5 mile mark, there seemed to be a lot of activity on the other side of the road. We had never skied the…

Date(s) Skied: April 30- May 1 Resort or Ski Area: Jay Peak Conditions: Packed powder turned to spring. Trip Report: Well I decided to head up to Jay for one last day of lift serviced skiing, and it was well worth it! I went up with some people from the local hill, we left at 4am on Friday and arrived at jay at 9:15ish. Skiing was great in the am was coverage edge to edge, as the day went on the mud patches to further and further apart. The free lunch…

There are a whole bunch o’ aspects of Jay Peak that just blow away Killington #1: They are open #2: The Tram Haus. The rooms are really nice. The only *cough* slopeside hotel *cough* at Killington is that hell hole Grand Summit with the cheap indoor-outdoor carpet, cheesey low end kitchenettes right out of Motel 6, and crappy furniture. The Tram Haus is comparable to slopside I’ve stayed at in Vail on expense report. Solid build quality. High end everything. You are right at…

What can I exactly say except today was phenomenal. The first few runs had tons of fresh, then lots of lift served hiking terrain options going up Northway or up Vermonter to the peak. Snow was deep like 16-20″ but it settled out quickly as the ground is warm and temps climbed. First things fresh were awesome, dense but awesome good in the afternood as everything got rolled over and some nice patural spring snow conditions were the norm. The Jet and Haynes were groomed as well as the…

Wow. Just wow. Wowowowow. Heavy, dense, and think. A lot of work up and a lot of work down. But DAMN — WOOOOOOOO April 28th powder day!!! No snow all the way up I-93, past Lincoln, past North Lincoln, still no snow on the ground but starting to change over to flakes at the Flume Visitor Center. I was expecting 6-12″ and I had faith in Cannon delivering. Sure enough, top of the notch and it is full on winter and my snow tires are OFF.
More in a bit, just got home, tired and…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Baij_c6jaaM April 18, 2010 Tuckerman Ravine New snow, but a bit scratchy at the top of Right Gulley I was keeping a close eye on the weather and avalanche reports for Mt Washington before heading up for a couple reasons. Each of my half dozen past experiences in the ravine were of the warm weather corn snow spring skiing type. Now it looked like full on winter was back in the mountains. Second, I had broken my thumb in late January, and had…

Date(s) Skied: April 24th, 2010 Resort or Ski Area: Killington, VT Conditions: Spring snow, mostly with moguls Trip Report: It seems that as of this season, Dylan has finally reached the point where he could handle a day of spring bumps at Killington, so we headed down for some skiing on Saturday. We were actually hoping to bring the boys out for some Superstar mogul bashing in May, but rumor had it Killingtons lifts might be done after the weekend. With…

Trip Report: The entire FamousInternetSkiers.com crew, except for Porter, who has a boo-bo, and Lionel, who has a job, was on hand to ski an unexpected series of storms that hit Mount Washington (and Mount Mansfield) over the last week and a half. Date(s) Skied: Sunday, April 25th, 2010 Resort or Ski Area: The BEAST Conditions: Sunny, Bluebird, 65 Trip Report: Challenging, but great finish to the season. Over the weekend I developed a massive tooth ache, brutal enough to bring Chuck Norris to his knees. I spent last night at my brother’s in Woodstock and all the modern chemistry he had at his disposal wasn’t helping. But, I wasn’t going to let that stop me.

Beautiful sunny skies! I had to deliver something to family and having view of Jay from their deck, I just had to hit the trails on Saturday. I skied from 10 to about 2pm. The stateside (Jay triple) had two trails open Haynes and the Jet. Haynes got bumped up more in the afternoon. I can say that the snow felt very heavy. I did not feel like this at Snow on their closing weekend. Both trails had great coverage top to bottom. I think the top part of the Jet trail may require walking next…

Date(s) Skied: Saturday 4/24/10 Resort or Ski Area: Killington, VT Conditions: Spring, Sunny, 60 Trip Report: Over the last week or so I’ve been really sick but I decided to suck it up for one more day as I was feeling a bit better this morning. Of course as soon as I start hitting bumps my stomach gets wicked upset. So basically my final day of the year consisted of about 7 or 8 runs and they all sucked for me except the first one. Took a couple down…

The Time for Tuckerman forum started calling Mt Washington’s Cog Railroad the “blog railroad” it’s great access to some super skiable ravines. I guess some of the TforT members have a fear that the unclean will start skiing their terrain and pressure is on to keep some of these lines spoken about only in code. Looks like they want to keep the Joey’s out!! So today we skied the Blurt Ravine!! One of the highlights was seeing a Moose up close. It was a long slog up the Blog under blue skies….

In honor of Administrative Professionals Day I decided to squeeze in a few more turns. Unfortunately I couldn’t find any groomed terrain. As you can see they are hanging on by a thread. No way they could make it to May 2nd. Okay really, they didn’t seem to lose any coverage since 4/15 when I was there last. Skylark(?) was real nice. Ovation was nice up top and a little narrow at the bottom. Superstar is in great shape. There are some nice lines on skiers right at the top with a…

There’s something very special about a ski day in the second half of April that features ample fresh snow with genuine powder turns early (some of them boot deep+) and then long silky surfy runs of cream cheese/mashed potatoes. I’m too beat to go into a lot of detail now but when Wildcat has up to nearly a foot of fresh that has not been through extended freeze-thaw cycle and it’s calm and up into the low 40s, well, it’s mighty sweet. And then it near the end of the day it started snowing…

Date(s) Skied: Sunday 4/18/10 Resort or Ski Area: Jay Peak, VT Conditions: 3-4″ of new snow on top of spring… mid 30s with heavy WET snow (soaked in about 20 mins) Trip Report: Went up for about 2 hours… stayed on the triple the whole time. Mainly skied the Jet and Haynes. The skiing was great… almost enough to be considered a powder day, but it just got too cold after a couple hours of being soaked.

Date(s) Skied: Saturday 4-17-2010 Resort or Ski Area: Sugarloaf Conditions: Pow, dumping all day Trip Report: Unlike the rest of New England, winter never really left Sugarloaf. Scoping out the trail report mid-week, they were still advertising 50+ trails open where as ther remaining few holdouts only had a handful. Last I was there was for the AZ summit, which was mid January hard snow conditions. Today? Mid-January POW conditions. :snow:

Finally got some free time……… My annual trip with the ski widow ended up in Quebec City this year. Definitely a must-do on any skiers list. Based out of the Chateau Frontenac. We spent much time in the D’orsay Pub, great beer, great food, great service, and a beautiful window seat every time! This is the advantage of off-season………cheap rates, and the city to yourself. So as Pam shopped and hit a couple museums, I hit the slopes for a couple days. Hit Mt. Saint Anne on Wednesday…

It warm…really really warm! Temps in the 70’s. Day 1(Friday) I was too warm in ski pants. The snow was really mushy, but it skied fairly well. The steeper terrain was your friend. Last weekend of the season.
The ammount of snow that melted in one week was staggering. You would have thought it was three weeks later. Mt. Snow did a great job patching together what they had to make a number of top to bottom runs. The weather was nice this weekend. A bit cooler than last, so it was more comfortable.
